Stay warm, stay safe: Greene County EMA shares cold-weather safety information
/As freezing temperatures move into Central Indiana this weekend, Greene County officials urge all residents to take precautions to protect themselves, their families, and their neighbors.
Staying Warm at Home
Layer up: Wear multiple layers of clothing, including hats, gloves, and scarves.
Check heating sources: Ensure furnaces, space heaters, and fireplaces are working safely. Never use ovens or grills indoors for heat.
Prevent frozen pipes: Let faucets drip slightly and open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing.
Look out for others: Check on elderly neighbors, friends, and family members who may need extra assistance.
Traveling Safely
Avoid unnecessary travel: Roads may be icy and visibility reduced. Stay home if possible.
Prepare your vehicle: Keep your gas tank at least half full, check tire pressure, and pack an emergency kit (blankets, water, snacks, flashlight, phone charger).
Drive cautiously: Slow down, increase following distance, and watch for black ice.
Stay informed: Monitor local weather alerts and road conditions before heading out.
Extreme cold can be dangerous. Frostbite and hypothermia can set in quickly. If you must be outside, limit exposure and take breaks indoors. Together, we can keep Greene County safe during this cold snap. Please share this message with friends and family and check in on your neighbors!
