Owensburg man killed in crash into an excavator in a bridge construction zone

One man was killed Thursday morning when he drove around two sets of barricades in a construction zone and crashed into an excavator.

Travis W. Caswell, 33, of Owensburg, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Caswell was driving a white 2015 Chevrolet 2500 pickup truck when the crash occurred at 7:27 a.m. this morning, Thursday, October 4.

Greene County Sheriff’s Deputy Jimmy Carpenter, the investigating officer, said Caswell was westbound on State Road 58 when he drove around a set of traffic barricades at SR 58 and West Gate Road. Caswell then continued on in the construction zone and drove around a second set of barricades, then crashed into a large excavator sitting in the roadway.

The highway was closed for bridge construction in this area.

When rescue personnel arrived, Caswell was found deceased from his injuries.

Deputy Carpenter said the reason why Caswell drove around the barricades is unknown at this time but the crash remains under investigation.

Personnel from Taylor Township Fire, the Greene County Ambulance Service and Owensburg Towing also responded to the scene.
