A Linton police officer received a special recognition in front of more than 54,000 football fans Saturday when he was honored as Indiana University's Hero of the Game.

JR Blazier of the Linton Police Department was recognized on the field at Memorial Stadium for his service to the community. The recognition was part of an Indiana University Athletics program sponsored by Simtra BioPharma Solutions honoring military members and first responders.

Blazier's wife, Jessica, said she nominated her husband after seeing IU Athletics' call for nominations earlier this year. Two others also submitted nominations on his behalf, making him the only nominee the family knows of who received multiple nominations.

For Jessica, the recognition carried special meaning.

"We are already so blessed to have him as our very own hero but seeing him receive this recognition in front of more than 54,000 people — and knowing that's my husband — made my heart absolutely swell with pride," she said.

The experience included more than simply watching the game. Jessica said IU provided complimentary tickets for the couple and went a step further by providing a third ticket so their son, Julian, could join them, along with parking for the game. With IU's home games sold out for the season, she said the opportunity made the invitation even more meaningful.

Near the end of halftime, the family met with an IU representative and received credentials allowing Blazier onto the field. Blazier was then recognized before the crowd as the stadium announcer highlighted his service.

Jessica thanked IU and Simtra for recognizing her husband, as well as those who took the time to nominate him. She also expressed appreciation to the Linton Police Department for making arrangements to cover Blazier's shift so he could attend the game with his family.

"I'm especially grateful that Julian and I were able to experience this moment with him," Jessica said. "It was an incredible honor, especially considering the number of IU students, alumni, fans, and family that could have read this posting and sent in a nomination."

The recognition also came on a memorable day for Hoosier fans, as the family was able to celebrate Blazier's honor while watching Indiana pick up its first victory of the season.

For the Blazier family, however, the final score was only part of what made the day unforgettable.

"What a day. What a memory," Jessica said. "And what a special way to celebrate our favorite hero."
