A Linton man faces four felony charges after a woman told police she was assaulted, threatened with a knife and prevented from leaving a residence, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Richard James Wilkins Jr., 42, was arrested Sept. 15 on preliminary charges of criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon, domestic battery with a deadly weapon, intimidation with a deadly weapon and strangulation. No bond was allowed.

Greene County sheriff’s Deputy Braxton Clark wrote that dispatch received a 911 call at approximately 3:58 a.m. Sept. 14 from the On The Fly gas station in Linton. An employee reported that an injured woman had entered the store and needed police and emergency medical assistance.

The woman told officers that Wilkins, whom she identified as her boyfriend of approximately 16 months, had struck and strangled her during an altercation at a residence on County Road 1100 West.

According to the affidavit, the woman said she initially left the residence and began walking down the road, but Wilkins followed her, grabbed her and forced her to return. She alleged that Wilkins threatened to leave her “in a ditch” if he went to jail.

After returning to the residence, Wilkins allegedly held the woman down, strangled her and prevented her from leaving. The woman also told investigators that Wilkins displayed a folding knife and threatened to stab her.

She reportedly escaped when other people in the residence distracted Wilkins and then ran to the gas station for help.

The woman was taken to Greene County General Hospital. Clark reported observing bruising and redness around her neck, injuries to her face and lip and marks on her wrist and arm.

Officers initially were unable to find Wilkins. He was located at approximately 6:28 a.m. Sept. 15 while riding a bicycle near County Road 1100 West and Mobile Manor.

During an interview with investigators, Wilkins reportedly said he and the woman had argued for two days. He alleged that she clawed his face and said he pushed her away. Wilkins acknowledged grabbing her wrist and possibly her dress but denied using a knife during the altercation, according to the affidavit.

Wilkins was booked into the Greene County Jail at 8:21 a.m. Sept. 15.
