Linton man accused of stabbing woman with scissors at gas station

A Linton man is facing a felony battery charge after police say he stabbed a woman in the back with a pair of scissors outside a local gas station.

Joseph Daniel Marlowe, 19, is charged with Level 5 felony battery in connection with an incident that occurred around 8:37 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Friendly Porch gas station in Linton.

According to court documents, officers were dispatched after a report that a woman had been stabbed with scissors. The victim told police she felt what she initially believed was a punch to her back before realizing she had been cut.

The victim reported that Marlowe walked up behind her and stabbed her with blue-handled scissors. She told officers the suspect laughed afterward and claimed he had tripped.

Police observed a small cut approximately 2 to 3 inches long on the victim’s back, along with an additional scratch extending several inches beyond the wound. The injury was not actively bleeding. Emergency medical personnel evaluated the victim at the scene and recommended further medical attention.

Investigators identified the suspect as Marlowe. Officers later located him in Sullivan County after additional reports that he had allegedly stabbed another individual inside a vehicle.

According to court documents, officers recovered a pair of blue-handled scissors from the vehicle. The scissors were photographed and placed into evidence.

Surveillance video from the gas station reportedly shows Marlowe walking behind the victim, pulling scissors from his pocket and stabbing her in the back. Police state the video shows him using force that caused the victim to lose her balance.

A warrant for Marlowe’s arrest was issued Feb. 23. He was taken into custody Feb. 24.

Authorities previously learned Marlowe had been transported to Regional Hospital in Terre Haute for evaluation.

Marlowe is currently being held in Greene County Jail without bond.
