A Lyons man accused of dealing methamphetamine was arrested last spring, bonded out of jail, then didn’t show up for a pre-trial conference as required. Warrant issued, arrested again, and this time, held without bond. He filed a motion to set bond, and the judge ruled on Wednesday.

Jeffery Ray Adams, 47, of Lyons, was taken into custody on Tuesday, October 23, by Indiana State Police Trooper Richard Klun and booked back into the Greene County Jail where Adams was held without bond.

Adams is accused of dealing meth and has two criminal cases pending against him – this was the fourth time he’s been arrested so far this year.

Adams was out on bond in a case involving disorderly conduct – unreasonable noise, a Class B misdemeanor. Police said he would not stop yelling during a midnight traffic stop in Worthington back in May. That case is pending – it’ll be back in court for a pre-trial conference in late November.

In the second and more serious case pending against Adams, he was arrested on May 15 following an investigation by the Greene County Drug Task Force. He is accused of selling methamphetamine on multiple occasions last spring. Officers said he had been traveling out-of-county to obtain quantities of meth that were being sold in Greene County.

Adams was charged with two counts of dealing in methamphetamine, one a Level 4 felony, the other a Level 5 felony. His bond in this case was first set at $25,000 surety with ten percent allowed. The defense filed a motion to reduce the bond and the judge approved, lowering his bond to $20,000. Adams posted $2,000 cash and was released.

A pre-trial conference was scheduled to occur shortly after, on September 12, but Adams asked for a continuance. The request was granted and the date was reset for Wednesday, October 17.

On that Wednesday at the pre-trial, his defense attorney, Deputy Public Defender Ellen Martin appeared but Adams was a no-show. Prosecutor Jarrod Holtsclaw requested a warrant for his arrest and the warrant was issued the next day. Within a week, Adams was picked up and returned to jail.

With no bond set, in late October, the defense filed a motion to set bond and the court scheduled a hearing date.

This past Wednesday morning, November 7, during the hearing in Greene Circuit Court with Judge Erik Allen presiding, evidence was presented and the judge issued his ruling later in the day.

The order states the court found Adams had previously posted bond then failed to appear as required. The court also found that in the other misdemeanor case pending against Adams, he had also failed to appear at a pre-trial conference as required.

Judge Allen did set bond for Adams - $10,000 cash only with no ten percent allowed. That amount is in addition to the $2,000 cash Adams has already posted in this case.

So Adams could be released, but it’ll take $10,000 cash. This case is currently scheduled back into court for the next pre-trial conference early in January followed by a trial by jury scheduled in late January.

As of 3 p.m. Friday, Adams had not posted bond and remained in the Greene County Jail.
