An inmate from Sullivan County is accused of hitting another inmate in the Greene County Jail because the other inmate changed the channel on the television.

Niles Conrad Hatch, 28, Carlisle, an inmate who is facing criminal charges in Sullivan County but is being housed in the Greene County Jail, has now been charged in Greene County following an investigation by Deputy James Carpenter of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department into a jailhouse fight.

The incident, which occurred in the jail’s H Pod in late March, was caught on surveillance video. Deputy Carpenter reported Hatch and another inmate were both sitting on a table then Hatch walked over to the other inmate and hit him with a closed fist. The other inmate went to the floor and Hatch continued to hit him until they got near the pod door where jail staff came in and separated the two inmates.

Both of the inmates declined to fill out a statement form about what happened and the inmate who was hit said he didn’t want charges to be filed against Hatch.

However, a jail officer, who talked to the inmate that was hit, said when he asked the inmate why the fight started, the inmate told him it started because he had changed the channel on the television.

Hatch has been to court for his initial hearing and has been charged with battery, a Class B misdemeanor.
