A Worthington man was arrested following a crash involving two vehicles late last night. He was reported to be passing multiple vehicles and hit the lead vehicle causing significant damage to both vehicles, but instead of stopping, he’s accused of leaving the scene. He was located and stopped about four miles away.

Jack Daniel Long, 36, Worthington, was arrested by Deputy Zachary Goad of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department early today, Friday, October 2. He was booked into the Greene County Jail at 2:10 a.m. following a crash that occurred at approximately 11:48 p.m. on Thursday, October 1.

Dispatch at the sheriff’s department got a call around 11:48 p.m. about a crash involving two vehicles at the intersection of West State Road 48 and County Road 1000 West. The caller said one of the vehicles, a silver SUV, had left the scene but the caller was able to provide the SUV’s license plate number.

Deputy Goad was dispatched but before he arrived on the scene, Officer Dustin Cain of the Jasonville Police Department had already located the SUV and had it pulled over on CR 900 North just west of North SR 59, approximately four miles from the crash scene.

Jack Daniel Long was the driver of the silver 2003 Toyota 4Runner which had a large amount of damage to the front end and didn’t have working headlights.

At the crash scene, Deputy Goad found a silver 2020 Toyota Tacoma with a North Carolina plate facing eastbound at the intersection on the south side of the road. It had a large amount of damage to the rear driver’s side truck bed and wheel.

Charles Wheeler, Jr. was the driver who said he was westbound on SR 48 when he attempted to turn south on CR 1000 West. He remembered seeing one of the vehicles traveling behind him traveling in the eastbound lane possibly attempting to pass him as well as two or three other vehicles traveling behind him.

Wheeler said the passing vehicle struck his truck, causing his truck to spin around and come to a stop on the edge of the highway. There was a dog box and a cooler in the bed. Both were thrown into a ditch. There was a dog inside the dog box but the dog was not injured.

The driver of the passing vehicle did not stop.

There were two passengers on board in Wheeler’s vehicle. The driver and passengers were not reported to be injured and said they did not need medical assistance.

Deputy Goad reported there was a lot of debris in the road and the bumper from Long’s vehicle was located west of the crash scene. The deputy also found a trail of fluid from the scene leading west on the highway.

Wheeler’s vehicle had to be towed from the scene.

Later when Deputy Goad talked to Long, Long allegedly admitted he was passing a couple of vehicles and ended up hitting the vehicle in front. When the deputy asked him why he didn’t stop to check on the other vehicles but kept going, Long allegedly said he quit his job that day and had PTSD.

Long was not reported to be injured.

Long was handcuffed and transported to jail where his bond was set at $500 surety with ten percent cash allowed.

Long is facing a preliminary charge of leaving the scene of an accident, a Class B misdemeanor.
