Driver continued to chase another vehicle after dispatch told him to stop

A driver, who was upset over another driver’s mistake, and who was carrying a loaded handgun, decided to chase the other driver. With officers on the way, a dispatcher told him several times to stop.

Draben Michael Anderson, 21, Jasonville, was arrested by Deputy James Carpenter of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department on Saturday afternoon, July 3.

At 1:45 p.m. last Saturday, Sgt. Brian Pilant of the Jasonville Police Department and GCSD Deputy Carpenter were both dispatched to a rolling incident that was in progress between two vehicles.

Draben Anderson had called the sheriff’s department to report a reckless driver. He said he was following a white Ford Ranger. Dispatch advised him to stop following the Ford Ranger but he allegedly refused.

At 1:48 p.m., with the officers on the way, dispatch told them that Anderson was still following the Ford Ranger and that he said he was armed with a handgun.

At 1:53 p.m., dispatch told the officers that Anderson said he was still following the Ford Ranger but a passenger in the Ranger had gotten out of the vehicle and was coming towards Anderson.

At 2:01 p.m., Sgt. Pilant had located both vehicles in the area of County Road 1500 West and CR 575 North and said he had Anderson’s handgun secured in his (Sgt. Pilant’s) possession.

When Deputy Carpenter arrived and talked to Anderson, he said the Ford Ranger had pulled out in front of him so he honked his horn and followed the Ranger so he could tell dispatch where to send officers. He admitted dispatch had told him to stop chasing the Ranger.

When asked about the handgun, Anderson said he keeps his handgun in his car for his safety and that he does not like to go anywhere unarmed. When dispatch checked the record, it showed Anderson had applied for a handgun permit but it was in a pending status.

Sgt. Pilant reported he found Anderson’s handgun, a 9 mm Taurus, in the glove compartment with a round chambered and additional rounds in the magazine plus three other magazines, a magazine holster and a handgun holster.

When Deputy Carpenter talked to the driver of the Ford Ranger, age 17, and his passenger, who was the juvenile’s father, the driver said he missed a turn and when he turned around to go back, he didn’t see Anderson’s car and cut the car off, but then the car started to chase them.

The passenger said at one point, they pulled over at a church to apologize to Anderson but when he (the passenger) got out of the Ranger, Anderson told him to get the ---- back in the car and that police were on the way. They then left but the car continued to follow them. The passenger also said he had “got on” to the driver for pulling out in front of Anderson’s car.

Anderson was taken into custody and booked into the Greene County Jail at 3:10 p.m. His bond was set at $1,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. He posted $100 bond and was released later that day.

A criminal case was filed against Anderson in Greene Superior Court earlier today. He is facing a preliminary charge of carrying a handgun without a license, a Class A misdemeanor.
