Controlled burn underway at Shakamak State Park

Guests visiting Shakamak State Park today may notice smoke in the area as park staff conduct a controlled burn on park property.

Controlled burns are carefully planned and help:

  • Remove accumulated leaves, dead grass, excess vegetation and invasive plants

  • Encourage native grasses and wildflowers

  • Improve habitats for wildlife and pollinators

  • Reduce fuel that could contribute to larger, uncontrolled wildfires

  • Maintain healthy ecosystems and preserve the natural diversity of Indiana’s state parks

Visitors should remain clear of the burn area, obey all posted signs and follow directions from park staff and first responders. Drivers also should use caution if smoke reduces visibility on park roads.
