Bloomfield man arrested on OWI charges after vehicle found in ditch

A Bloomfield man was arrested after police found him in a vehicle in a ditch along U.S. Highway 231 while allegedly intoxicated.

According to court documents, Timothy S. Rogers, 63, was arrested March 17 on preliminary charges of operating while intoxicated and operating while intoxicated endangerment, both misdemeanors.

Ryan Montgomery, a lieutenant with the Bloomfield Police Department, reported being dispatched around 9:36 p.m. March 16 to a vehicle in a ditch near 668 S. U.S. Highway 231.

Upon arrival, Montgomery located a gray 2002 Hyundai Elantra in a ditch near the south entrance to the South Shopping Center. Rogers was found seated in the driver’s seat as the sole occupant, with the vehicle still running.

Police reported detecting a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle. Montgomery also observed Rogers had glassy eyes and slurred speech, according to the affidavit.

Rogers told police he had consumed a couple of drinks earlier in the evening at his residence. He also stated he had been “sleeping while driving” and believed it was morning before being told otherwise.

Due to the location of the vehicle, officers assisted Rogers out of the ditch and onto level ground. Police said Rogers had difficulty maintaining his balance.

During attempts to conduct standardized field sobriety tests, Rogers was unable to follow instructions, according to the report.

A portable breath test administered at the scene showed a result of 0.153 grams of alcohol per 210 liters of breath, police said.

Rogers agreed to submit to further testing and was transported to the Greene County Jail. However, after an unsuccessful attempt to complete a certified breath test, Rogers became ill and was taken to Greene County General Hospital, where a blood draw was conducted for testing.

Rogers was later transported back to the Greene County Jail and booked on the charges.

He is scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court on March 23.
