While stopped at the intersection of State Road 54 and County Road 1000 West, a member of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department recognized a vehicle in front of him as one from a previous stop. After a May 7 traffic stop, a 55-year-old Linton man, previously convicted of operating a vehicle while intoxicated while engendering a person, was arrested for operating a vehicle without ever receiving a license as well as operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Sgt. Jordan Allor arrested Steven John Pollitt on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, first offense and no endangerment; operating a vehicle while intoxicated, prior conviction within seven years; and knowingly or intentionally operating a motor vehicle without even receiving a license.

Sgt. Allor recognized the Chevrolet Aveo driven by Pollitt from a traffic stop in June 2022. During that stop, according to the probable cause affidavit, Pollitt told Sgt. Allor he did not have a valid driver’s license.

Pollitt turned east at the stop light and turned into the Phil Harris Golf Course. As the vehicle turned into the golf course, Sgt. Allor was able to identify the driver as Pollitt. Allor turned into the golf course and initiated a traffic stop.

Allor instructed Pollitt to come to the back of his car. As he started walking, Allor alleged he had unsteady balance and walked into the rear driver’s side of his vehicle. When Allor informed him the reason for the stop was that he was driving without a license, Pollitt alleged he tried to pass the test but was unable to. As he was explaining this to Sgt. Allor wrote in the probable cause affidavit that he could smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath.

Pollitt allegedly explained that he was driving to a friend’s house but admitted he knew he wasn’t supposed to be driving.

Pollitt performed – and failed – a portion of the standardized field sobriety test. He was unable to complete all tests due to issues with his feet. A portable breath test showed a level of .122. He agreed to a chemical test; however, he was unable to provide a sufficient sample. He was transported to Greene County General Hospital for a blood draw, results pending. Pollitt stated he had several medical conditions and was cleared prior to being transported to jail.

While speaking with Pollitt, according to the probable cause affidavit, he told Sgt. Allor he’d consumed four or five beers at the Moose in Linton. He alleged he was driving from the Moose and was on State Road 54 or 59. He claimed he wasn’t sure what direction he was traveling as he doesn’t know directions. He was unsure of the date, telling Sgt. Allor it was the 8th or 9th when it was the 7th, but knew the correct day of the week. When asked what city or town he was in, Pollitt responded by saying Greene County, Ind.

Pollitt was booked into Greene County Jail at 8:43 p.m. with bond set at $8,000 surety with 10% allowed.

He is being charged with:

Operating a vehicle while intoxicated, first offense and no endangerment, a Class C Misdemeanor
Operating a vehicle while intoxicated, prior conviction within seven years, a Level 6 Felony
Knowingly or intentionally operating a vehicle without even receiving a license, a Class C Misdemeanor

Once at the Greene County Jail, Sgt. Allor reviewed his criminal history and found he was convicted of operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person on Oct. 5, 2022.

He will appear in Greene Superior Court May 11 for an initial hearing.
