Rita Ann (Thompson) Abrell
Rita Ann (Thompson) Abrell, 88, of Terre Haute, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Sunday, October 16, 2022 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield, Indiana. Rita was born in Freedom, Indiana on January 28, 1934 to Roy Thompson and Gretchen (Franklin) Thompson.
Rita was a graduate of Worthington-Jefferson High School and went on to attend Indiana University.
Rita Ann had an especially beautiful voice and enjoyed sharing her music with her church families. She grew up in the Baptist Church in Worthington, was a long-time member of the First Christian Church in Bloomington and recently was a member of the Bethany United Church of Christ in Terre Haute. Rita Ann played the French Horn, was an avid sports fan, enjoyed being in a golf league and a bowling league. She and her husband John once owned over 9 I.G.A. grocery stores and were long time members and supporters of the I.U. Varsity Club.
Rita Ann is survived by four sons, Rick (Kathy) Abrell, Mark Abrell, Steve Abrell, Shawn Abrell, one daughter, Debbie Vilchuck, all of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Chris (Lisa) Abrell, Shelly (Brian) Ogsburry, Shane (Shannon) Abrell, Shannon (Artie) Sauer, Brandi Abrell, Justin (Nina) Abrell, Cody (Jason) Huffman, Jordan (Amber) Abrell, Bryce (Anne) Vilchuck, and Ashley Vilchuck; twenty great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; a sister, Terresa Thompson, and two brothers, Kent Thompson (Donna) and David (Lacy) Holmes.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two sisters, Sandra Roudebush and Vickie Query.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM, Monday, October 24, 2022 at the West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home, 105 North Montgomery Street, Spencer. Pastor Tim McCullough will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery.
Visitation will be 11:00 AM until the time of service at 1:00 PM, at the funeral home.
