Phillip R. Herndon
/Phillip R. Herndon, age 86, of Linton, passed away peacefully at 10:20 P.M. on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, at Greene County General Hospital in Linton. He was born in Linton on March 12, 1935, the son of Gene and Mary (Lehman) Herndon.
Phil was a 1953 graduate of Lyons High School. He served in the Army National Guard for seven years. Phil worked for Wilhelm Construction during his younger years, and retired from Peabody Coal in 1997.
He was a member of Lyons Assembly of God where he served on the church board for many years, and the United Mine Workers of America.
Phil enjoyed fishing, camping, and spending time with his friends drinking coffee at McDonalds.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years whom he married June 20, 1954, Bonnie L. (Bellamy) Herndon of Linton, his daughter, Lana Lee Alexander of Sullivan, a son, Greg (Becky) Herndon of Lyons, his granddaughter, Mandy (Matthew) Wall of Coal City, and two great-grandsons, Levi and John, brother, Bill “Doc” (Susan) Herndon, a sister, Naoma Cooper, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandson, J.P. Alexander, a son-in-law, Jack Alexander, and his brother, Donnie Herndon.
Funeral service will be held at Lyons Assembly of God at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 21, 2021, with Pastor Gerald DeVore officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Linton.
Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 11 A.M. until the time of service.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the J.P. Alexander Memorial Scholarship Fund through the Wabash Valley Community Foundation. Envelopes will be provided at the Church.
