Natasha (Dougherty) (Graves) Swingley

Natasha (Dougherty) (Graves) Swingley, 72, of Bloomington, IN, passed away suddenly Saturday, June 11, 2022, surrounded by her daughter and son-in-law. She was born in New Albany on November 30, 1949, the daughter of Robert and Dorothy Dougherty of Salem, Indiana.

She was a graduate of Salem High School and held four degrees from Indiana University-Bloomington. She graduated with a PhD in Physcology from the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University. She was guidance counselor at both Eastern-Greene and Linton-Stockton High School and began the Linton Miner RedSteppers Program (now Miner Cadets). She was instrumental in beginning the Cathrine Hamilton Center in Lyons where she works until her move to the Terre Haute location. She and Roland, whom married in October 1980, owned Swingley Cheveloret in Terre Haute, Circle Cheverlot in downtown Indianapolis, and Quality Leasing in Broad Ripple for many years.

Upon the sale of the dealerships, she then started RSN, Ltd. – a woman-owned graphics design freelance business she operated out of her home. She designed many pieces for those around Indiana and beyond – including Indiana University, Indianapolis Colts, Pacers, Lumina, Eli Lilly, enVista, IU Campus Bus, IU Bookstore, and more. This business was still in operation at the time of her passing (owning this for over 35 years). She and Roland were fortunate to travel the world due to work and were proud to give back and serve on many philanthropic needs.

At the time of her death, she actively served on the: IU Presidents Circle, IU Well House Society Board of Advisors, IU Women’s Philanthropy Leadership Council, IU Athletics Hoosier Hundred, IU Varsity Club, Mayor Hudnut’s Indianapolis Futures Committee, Indianapolis City Works Board, Indianapolis City Market Board, IU Auditorium Circle of Friends, IU Eskenazi Museum of Art Director’s Circle, IU Colloquium for Women of Achievement, IU Theater Circle, IU Kelley School of Business Entrepreneur’s Circle, IU School of Education Dean’s Circle, IUPUI Jaguar Athletics Support circle, IUPUI Theater Circle.

She is survived by her daughter, Heather Graves (Kevin) Rader of Linton and her beloved goldendoodle Harper. She has many dear friends with whom she gathered with weekly – including Curt Simic, Perry Maull, and Pam Sprong. Many other friends shared many conversations during zoom with Covid restrictions which prevented in person gathering.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland of 39 years, on September 29, 2019 and her parents, Bob and Dorothy Dougherty of Salem along with many aunts and uncles, and her beloved Bert.

Public viewing will be held at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton on Friday, June 17, 2022 from 4-7 p.m., with a Celebration of Life beginning at 7 p.m. Kevin Rader will be offering the welcome and offer anyone to speak.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the IU Foundation or Furry Friends Veterinary Hospital (Bloomington) in Harper’s name.
