Joseph Marion Cabel

Joseph Marion Cabel, 88, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday December 23, 2018. He was born on March 24, 1930 in Washington, Indiana to Joseph and Helen (Bouchard).

Joe graduated from Washington Catholic High School, and Indiana University with a Bachelors degree in Education and from Indiana State University with a Master’s degree in counseling. On December 30, 1955 Joe married Janet Lou Johnson, together they had four children. Joe and Jan enjoyed gardening, coaching, teaching and visiting with family, students, and friends.

Joe was a History teacher and coach at L & M High School and later a Counselor at White River Valley High School. During the summers he coached swimming and managed the Linton Swimming Pool. He loved teaching, coaching and mentoring young people. He was a great listener, who helped shape many young people’s paths in life. Some of his favorite moments were leading pep sessions, coaching track, basketball (with Jim Duffy), and swimming. He was a willing conspirator with his wife Jan in many school events: The Fall Fling (with haunted house), Sock – Hops, Pep Rallies, Canoe and Spelunking trips (with Alan Olson), adventurous Senior Trips and magnificent Junior/Senior Proms. He was a famous family fishing guide on many Wisconsin trips, a master euchre player; card trickster (the “Wizard”) and Halloween prankster. After retiring from education, he loved visits from friends and family, in particular his grandchildren, Kate, Emma, Joe, Austin, Ben, Charlie Joe, Lillian and great grandson Gus.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Janet, daughter Claire (Charles), and sons Joe (Jean), Dan (Adrienne), Jon (Holly), seven grandchildren and a great grandson.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 P.M. on Friday at Jenkins Funeral Home in Lyons. Interment will be private.
