Brooks Martin Mattox, age 34, of Jasonville, passed away on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, at his residence. Brooks arrived in this world in Vincennes on March 5, 1987, the son of Martin W. & Cynthia K. (Myers) Mattox. 

He was welcomed by a very large family who loved him and appreciated his unique altruistic presence. Brooks was not like anyone else… he never pretended to be.  Brooks was simply an ethereal being. He was better than the world he lived in. His name perfectly suited him. Brooks was and will continue to be the best part of humanity. He cared about people.   Brooks knew what was important to him. Brooks was a true Southern Indiana country boy at heart. What mattered most during his existence was mostly emphasized by his love of nature, the flora, the fauna, and the arts.

He loved the outdoors / nature—(all sorts of plants and animals). He had his favorite “Sweetie Cat”.

Brooks loved mushroom hunting ever since he was a child …searching the woods for those tasty Morel mushrooms.

Early on Brooks developed an affinity for horticulture.  For quite a few seasons he enjoyed growing a variety of vegetables.  He and his brother Dustin operated an organic vegetable stand at the Linton Farmers Market. —

More specifically, he became fascinated by the many varieties of mushrooms and their development. His overall knowledge and wealth of information about the many classifications of mushrooms were sought by many other horticulturists around the world. Yes, really!

Brooks was a highly intelligent man. He, also, had artistic talent. His drawings caught the attention of Mr. Joseph Barbera (the creator of many cartoon series — i.e. The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Scooby-Doo, and others). Mr. Barbera admired and praised his work.

Although he did enjoy his travels to California, he loved his Indiana home the most. That’s where Brooks felt most at home and at ease, he was a true Southern Indiana boy at heart.

Brooks selflessly left all of us on November 23, 2021.  He has now created a space and time for all of us who truly loved him to go on into the future. Brooks would like for us all to no longer wonder or worry about what he is or is not doing according to our expectations. Moreover, Brooks is at peace now.

The true definition of his being and time spent with us will continue to be witnessed still as we take time to gaze at the natural beauty around us.

Brooks would want all of us to take a walk in the woods one day and upon seeing a mushroom to think of him.

Brooks will continue to nourish our spirit as we focus and find the truth and good within us all.

Brooks leaves behind his parents, Cynthia K. Mattox of Linton and Martin (Julie) Mattox of Jasonville, his brother, Dustin Mattox, sisters, Kellsey Forgione and Paige Price, his maternal grandparents, Bill and Sandra Myers, paternal grandmother, Ruth Marie Mattox, paternal great-grandmother, Edith Bohnert, aunts & uncles, and nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Jim Mattox.

Private family services will be held at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton.
