Worthington woman faces auto theft charge after police pursuit

A Worthington woman faces felony charges after allegedly taking her daughter’s vehicle without permission and leading police on a pursuit through town.

Linda Sherrill, 48, was arrested Oct. 22 and charged with auto theft and resisting law enforcement using a vehicle, both Level 6 felonies.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Greene County Circuit Court, Worthington Town Marshal Jeremy Brinkman was dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of Lessie Street for a reported vehicle theft.

The complainant allegedly told police that Sherrill, her mother, had asked for a ride to a friend’s house. When the complainant said she could not provide a ride at that time, Sherrill allegedly became argumentative and walked away from the residence.

Sherrill later returned and allegedly entered the complainant’s 2016 Chevrolet Malibu. The key fob had been left inside the vehicle, according to the affidavit.

The complainant allegedly told Sherrill to stop but said Sherrill drove away. She told police Sherrill did not have permission to operate the vehicle and had no legal ownership interest in it.

While traveling to an address where the complainant believed Sherrill might have gone, Brinkman reported seeing the Malibu traveling east on Terre Haute Road toward Worthington near Wabash Avenue.

Brinkman said he identified Sherrill as the driver and attempted to initiate a traffic stop using the emergency lights and siren on his marked patrol vehicle. Sherrill allegedly continued north on Wabash Avenue before turning east on Park Street.

The pursuit continued through the intersection of Park and Meridian streets before the vehicle stopped near Park and Crist streets, according to the affidavit.

During a high-risk traffic stop, Brinkman reportedly ordered Sherrill to place her hands outside the window. She initially complied but then allegedly pulled her hands back inside the vehicle and began moving around.

The affidavit states that Sherrill then exited the vehicle quickly and repeatedly asked the officer to shoot her. Brinkman reported telling Sherrill he did not want to hurt her and ordering her to turn around.

When she allegedly failed to comply, Brinkman deployed a Taser. Sherrill was then taken into custody and examined by emergency medical personnel.

After being advised of her rights, Sherrill allegedly told police the car belonged to her daughter but claimed she had permission to use it. She then said she did not want to answer additional questions, according to the affidavit.

Sherrill was transported to Greene County General Hospital for medical clearance before being booked into the Greene County Jail.
