Charles Gatlin Hawkins, 37, Worthington, was arrested by Deputy Marshall Michael McGough of the Worthington Police Department early Thursday, November 17, following an incident that began late Wednesday, November 16.

Officer McGough responded to a report of an unruly man at an apartment on East Union Street in Worthington when Greene County Dispatch received a 911 call from a woman who said Hawkins was yelling and throwing things at his mother while he was holding a screwdriver in his hand.

When the officer arrived at the apartment, he could hear the yelling and he recognized the voice of Hawkins from a previous incident. The officer attempted to make contact with Hawkins but Hawkins said, “Go away, I'll whoop your ***.”  When Hawkins was asked to come to the door and talk to the officer, he allegedly became irate and started yelling and banging on the door.

When Deputy Sergeant Jordan Allor of the Greene County Sheriff's Department arrived on the scene to assist, they could hear the voice of a woman yelling and Sergeant Allor began to kick the door in to make entry into the apartment. Officer McGough reported that when the door was opened, Hawkins was standing in the middle of the room facing the door with a screwdriver and a dog chain wrapped around his hand. He was told to drop these items and get on the ground. After a short time, Hawkins did drop the items but put his hands in his pockets and yelled at the officers to “Call Pudge.”

Officer McGough told Hawkins to remove his hands from his pockets or he would be tased. At that point Hawkins turned away from the officers and tried to leave the front room and he was given another warning to get on the ground. Hawkins did not comply and Officer McGough deployed his taser. Deputy Sergeant Allor then proceeded to detain Hawkins but Hawkins started to physically resist and the taser was deployed again. Hawkins then complied and put his hands behind his back and they asked Greene County Dispatch to send EMS to the scene.

While waiting for EMS to arrive, Officer McGough talked to the mother who said she was sleeping and heard screaming and when she got out of bed, Hawkins started throwing things at her. She alleged that he pushed her to the floor and hit her on the head with his hand and she had pain in her knees from hitting the floor and pain in her head from being hit.

When he talked to an aunt of Hawkins who called 911, she told the officer that she heard the commotion and grabbed her phone to call 911 and she had to hold the door shut while she was on the phone with dispatch because Hawkins started hitting her bedroom door. She also said that while they were waiting for an officer to arrive, the two women tried to leave the apartment but Hawkins threatened them with the screwdriver and they feared he would use it on them if they tried to leave.

Hawkins refused to speak to the officers.

When EMS arrived and checked him out, they said he could be transported to the hospital to be medically cleared by a doctor and so he was transported to Greene County General for a general medical evaluation. After he was cleared, he was transported to the Greene County Sheriff's Department where he was booked into the Greene County Jail at 1:14 AM with bond set at $27,000 surety with 10% cash allowed.

Greene County Prosecutor Jarrod Holtsclaw filed a criminal case against Hawkins in Greene Circuit Court earlier today, Friday, November 18, and an initial hearing was scheduled to take place this morning at 10:45 AM via two way video connection between the Green County Jail and the courtroom.

During the hearing, Hawkins said he was waiting on his attorney from Hamilton Center and walked out of the room so the hearing was not successfully completed. The judge appointed Deputy Public Defender Ellen Martin to represent Hawkins and his initial hearing will be rescheduled for another day.

Hawkins is being charged with:

  • Criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon, a Level 3 felony,

  • Intimidation while drawing or using a deadly weapon, a Level 5 felony,

  • Domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor, and

  • Resisting law enforcement – knowingly or intentionally forcibly resisting, a Class A misdemeanor.
