Amanda Lynn West, 43, Clay City, was arrested by Officer Skylar Scott of the Jasonville Police Department early Wednesday, February 1.

Around 2:15 AM, Officer Scott saw a black 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee headed west on Main Street in Jasonville without any functioning taillights so he initiated a traffic stop that was conducted at the intersection of Main and California streets.

West was a passenger. The driver provided his driver’s license and the vehicle registration. West said she did not have her driver’s license with her but she provided the officer with her name and date of birth. A check of their records showed the driver’s driver’s license was suspended due to an infraction. Both driver and passenger were then asked to exit the vehicle and a citation was issued to the driver.

But when the driver opened his door and got out, Officer Scott saw a capped hypodermic syringe laying on the floor of the driver’s side of the vehicle. When asked about the syringe, the driver said he did not know anything about a syringe inside the vehicle but West allegedly said it was hers.

During their conversation, West said she is a recovering drug addict and the syringe had been inside the vehicle for around six months and she had forgotten it was there. When asked what the syringe was for, she said it was for methamphetamine. She also said there were no other illegal items in the vehicle and no other illegal items were found in a search of the vehicle.

The driver made contact with a family member to come pick up the vehicle since it had no functioning taillights and he was later released from the scene.

West was taken into custody and transported to the Greene County Sheriff's Department. On the way there, she told Officer Scott she had a marijuana grinder in her bra but didn't think there were any other additional items. She said she has a card which permits her to obtain clean syringes from a location in Monroe County and she then admitted she had obtained the syringe located in the vehicle a couple of days earlier.

Once they arrived at the jail, Officer Scott asked West if there was methamphetamine located in her bra and she allegedly said there might possibly be methamphetamine in her bra. Jail staff then removed a purple and red marijuana grinder and a small clear baggie containing a white crystal substance from her bra. The white crystal substance later field-tested positive as methamphetamine.

West was booked in at 3:43 AM. She was being held without bond pending court appearance. The time and date of her initial hearing is not yet known but a criminal case has been filed against her in Greene Superior Court on charges of:

  • Possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony, and

  • Unlawful possession of syringe, a Level 6 felony.

Greene County Deputy Camron Frye assisted on the scene.
