Who’s pointing lasers at aircraft? GCSD wants to know
Who has been pointing lasers at aircraft flying over Greene County? The Greene County Sheriff’s Department would like to know.
GCSD Major George Dallaire says the FAA has complained about this happening in Greene County and he wants people to know that pointing a laser at an aircraft is a federal crime.
“In March and June of this year, third-shift deputies have received multiple complaints from the Terre Haute Federal Aviation Administration regarding lasers being pointed at pilots flying over Greene County,” said Dallaire.
In each incident, multiple attempts were made to locate the person pointing the laser, but Dallaire said the person doing the pointing had stopped before deputies arrived in the general area.
“This is very dangerous,” said Dallaire. “A pilot can lose control of their aircraft and possibly have their eyes damaged.
“This is also a federal crime. A person convicted of this crime could face up to a $250,000 fine and up to five years in prison.”
Anyone having information regarding who may be pointing lasers at passing aircraft is asked to contact the Greene County Sheriff’s Department by calling 812-384-4411.
