A traffic stop by a JPD officer on a speeding vehicle resulted in charges and a warrant issued yesterday for a Bloomfield woman accused of meth possession as well as driving while suspended.

Jessica L. Nelson, 30, Bloomfield, is wanted on a warrant for her arrest that was issued yesterday, Tuesday, October 6, on preliminary charges of:

• Possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony,

• Unlawful possession of syringe, a Level 6 felony,

• Driving while suspended – a knowing violation with a prior conviction within 10 years, a Class A misdemeanor, and

• Possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor.

On Saturday, September 26, Officer Jacob Gambill of the Jasonville Police Department was on patrol and running radar on State Road 48 when he noticed a blue Honda Civic that appeared to be speeding. Radar indicated it was going 62 mph in a 50 mph zone.

Officer Gambill pulled out to catch up and initiate a traffic stop but the blue Honda pulled into a driveway and the driver, later identified as Jessica Nelson, got out and started walking to the front door of a residence. Officer Gambill stopped there and told her why he was stopping. When Nelson was asked if she lived there, she said she did not. He asked her if her license was suspended and she admitted it was. She said she had a state ID card. Then she admitted she pulled into the driveway hoping the officer wouldn’t stop her.

Nelson also said she had just bought the vehicle and allegedly admitted she did not have insurance, and when asked if there was anything illegal in the vehicle, said there was marijuana in her purse, just purchased while on a trip to Linton, but she declined to consent to a search of the vehicle. Officer Gambill obtained a search warrant.

During the search, officers reported finding the marijuana plus syringes including one loaded and full of methamphetamine – it field-tested positive.

Nelson was not taken into custody at that time but charges were filed later and the warrant issued.
