Train pedestrian accident results in death of Sullivan County resident
SHELBURN, IND. - At approximately 8:25 PM Sunday, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office was alerted of a train/ pedestrian accident in Shelburn.
Deputy Colt Thompson determined the pedestrian had been walking west on Mill Street, and had just crossed the CSX rail crossing, as a northbound train approached the intersection.
As the train passed, with lights functioning and horn sounding, the victim was narrowly grazed by the locomotive, resulting in life threatening injuries.
The victim was transported by SCAT ambulance, before being flown by Lifeline helicopter to Indianapolis.
The Sheriff’s Office was notified at approximately 1:30 AM, by Methodist Hospital staff, and the Marion County Coroner’s Office that the victim had passed away.
The victim has been identified as Ashley Kay Lewis – 38 of Shelburn.
Sheriff’s investigators met with CSX authorities and rail police late Sunday. After speaking with witnesses and reviewing video footage, authorities have no reason to believe that foul play was involved.
