Theft charge filed after resident let two strangers in to use the bathroom

After two people knocked on the door of a Greene County residence and were allowed to use the bathroom, the resident later discovered a credit card was missing. Now there’s a warrant out for a woman who allegedly used it at several locations in three counties.

Niki Lynn Lucy Linville, 26, of Columbus, Ind., is wanted in Greene County on a warrant issued on a preliminary charge of theft with a prior conviction for either theft or conversion, a Level 6 felony.

Linville was under investigation by Deputy Harvey Holt of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department for over a month before the warrant was issued at the end of February. It’s still outstanding.

Deputy Holt began his investigation when a man who lives on State Road 54, Bloomfield, reported the theft of his wife’s credit card. He apparently didn’t realize the card was missing for a couple of weeks but when a woman pretending to be from the IU Federal Credit Union called twice in an attempt to obtain the PIN number for the card in his wife’s name, he discovered the card was missing from a bedroom dresser.

His investigation led Deputy Holt to check security videos where the card was used at several retail stores in Monroe, Morgan and Bartholomew counties. Holt was able to identify the suspect using the card as Niki Linville.

When Deputy Holt showed photos of the suspect to the resident, he recognized Linville as a person who had stopped at his house several weeks earlier along with a man. The two were let inside the residence and while they were there, Linville was allowed to use the bathroom which was next to the bedroom where the card was in a dresser drawer.

Deputy Holt was able to locate Linville. She was in the Bartholomew County Jail and she was interviewed at the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department on February 13. At first, she allegedly denied using the bathroom at the residence but then said the male friend had given the card to her after they had visited the residence to use the bathroom.

Holt reported Linville has multiple prior convictions for theft or conversion including one conviction in November 2015 and another in March 2016, both in Bartholomew County.

A quick check of court records indicates she also has multiple warrants out for her arrest, a total of six issued in the counties of Morgan, Marion and Greene.

Since the local warrant was issued for her arrest here, a prisoner transport was ordered on March 7 for Linville to be here to appear in Greene Superior Court for an initial hearing on April 6. But since many cases are being pushed back during the COVID-19 pandemic, this week the transport order was cancelled and her hearing is canceled for now. It will be rescheduled at some point in the future.
