A Switz City man who had been to a party north of Worthington then drove back into town, stopped at the grocery store, stopped at the Dollar store, then stopped again when a WPD officer pulled him over. His next stop was the Greene County Jail.

Kevin W. Stalcup, 47, Switz City, was arrested by Deputy Marshal James T. Harrington of the Worthington Police Department on Saturday, July 7.

Harrington was near the intersection of State Road 67 and South Jefferson Street when he saw Stalcup driving a blue 2000 Ford Explorer northbound, first on the highway then on Jefferson. The driver’s side window was rolled down and Harrington alleged the driver was not wearing a seat belt. He initiated a traffic stop.

The officer obtained identification from Stalcup and one of his two passengers, ran a records check then wrote Stalcup a citation for failure to use a safety belt. But when he returned to Stalcup’s vehicle to issue the citation, he said he could smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage so he asked if they had consumed alcohol.

Stalcup allegedly denied that anyone had been drinking but he did say they were on their way to a party north of town so they had alcoholic beverages in the vehicle.

Harrington reported the results of a portable breathalyzer test showed Stalcup was over the legal limit.

Stalcup was transported to the Greene County Sheriff’s Department where he allegedly failed standard field sobriety tests, but agreed to a chemical test – the result was reported to show a blood-alcohol content of .094.

He was arrested, then in an interview, Harrington said Stalcup admitted he had been at the party prior to the traffic stop and had consumed an estimated six beers.

His bond was set at $4,500 surety with ten percent cash allowed. After posting $450 cash, he was released the next day.

A court date was set for today, Monday, July 23, for an initial hearing to formally charge him with:

• Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person less than 18 years old, a Level 6 felony,
• Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, a Class A misdemeanor,
• Operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor, and
• Operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent to at least .08 but less than .15, a Class C misdemeanor.
