Suspect arrested, victim identified in Owen County homicide
Late this evening, Monday, September 20, the Owen County Sheriff’s Department reported their detectives had a suspect in custody in a homicide investigation that started last Tuesday when a deceased woman was found lying in a roadway in rural Owen County northwest of Spencer.
Jay White, 36, Spencer, was taken into custody at the Indianapolis International Airport around 11 p.m. by OCSD detectives, on a charge of felony murder in the death of Elizabeth Stevens.
White is accused of shooting Stevens while they were both passengers in a vehicle. Stevens died from a single gunshot wound to the head. Her body was found on Texas Pike by a passerby who called law enforcement.
Around 9:30 that night, OCSD deputies were dispatched to Texas Pike near Manhattan Road where they found the victim’s body in the roadway.
Last Thursday, OCSD Chief Deputy Matt Miller announced the death was being investigated as a homicide but the identity of the victim was not released pending the results of an autopsy.
No additional information regarding more details or the identity of any other persons involved such as the driver of the vehicle has been released.
OCSD stated the investigation is still active and further details may be released later.
