Speeder on I69 arrested for identity deception

A driver stopped for speeding last week on I69 was arrested and is facing a felony charge for identity deception. He said he didn’t have his driver’s license with him and he allegedly gave a state trooper the wrong name and birthdate.

Sherman Quince Anthony

Sherman Quince Anthony, 57, Richmond, Ind., was arrested by Indiana State Police Trooper John Yung last Thursday, March 3.

Trooper Yung was working on I69 around 11:38 a.m. last Thursday when he saw a northbound white 1997 Chevrolet box truck traveling in the left lane, passing other vehicles. It appeared to be going faster than the 70 mph speed limit and Trooper Yung then tracked it going 85 mph. He initiated a traffic stop and the truck pulled over.

The driver, later identified as Anthony, said he didn’t have his driver’s license with him and he didn’t have the vehicle registration. When asked for the name on his driver’s license, Anthony allegedly said he was Sherman Q. Anthony Jr. and he gave his birthdate.

When Trooper Yung returned to his patrol vehicle and checked Anthony’s information, he didn’t receive a return on the info – the name and identifiers did not match the info on any driver’s license.

When Trooper Yung asked Anthony about the info again, Anthony allegedly said his middle name was Quince and his address was in Muncie.

Back in his patrol vehicle, various techniques were used to determine the driver’s correct name was Sherman Quince Anthony. He also determined Anthony’s correct birthdate. He also learned Anthony’s driver’s license was suspended.

Anthony first got a warning for speeding, but after Trooper Eric Nash arrived on scene to assist with a passenger, Anthony was arrested then transported to the sheriff’s department where he was booked into the Greene County Jail at 1:20 p.m. with bond set at $4,500 surety with ten percent cash allowed. He posted $450 and was released later the same day.

Anthony is scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court on March 14 for his initial hearing on charges of:

  • Identity deception, a Level 6 felony, and

  • Refusal to identify self, a Class C misdemeanor.
