A woman who crashed her car into a ditch and broke a couple of wooden posts was not injured. She got out and walked home but later that night, a deputy knocked on her door and arrested her for leaving the scene of an accident.

Melanie Sue Hash

Melanie Sue Hash, 34, Solsberry, was arrested by Deputy Alan Jackson of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department late Wednesday, November 27, following an investigation into a car crash.

The crash occurred sometime on November 27, the night before Thanksgiving. A passing motorist saw the car in a ditch on Tulip Road and called the sheriff’s department. The caller said nobody was around the car.

Deputy Alan Jackson was dispatched along with Deputy Davis Aerne. When they arrived, they found a blue 2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue in the ditch. Two wooden support posts with cattle panels attached were broken. There still wasn’t anybody around.

The vehicle was towed and in accord with GCSD policy, inventoried prior to towing. Deputy Jackson reported they found a white tube inside a dash compartment that had a white residue which field-tested positive for the presence of methamphetamine. The vehicle was registered to a man who lived on Parsley Road, a family member of Hash. Hash was later determined to have been the driver.

While deputies were on the scene, a different family member of Hash stopped and said they had gotten a text message from Hash saying she had wrecked the car but she was okay and had walked home.

When Deputy Jackson then went to find Hash and knocked on her door, she answered and admitted to driving and wrecking the car. When asked why she didn’t report it, she allegedly said that around there, if somebody wrecks their vehicle and nobody is hurt, they just get the vehicle the next day. She also said she wrecked because she was looking at her phone. Regarding the meth, she allegedly said the tube was not hers.

Hash was booked into the Greene County Jail around 11:30 p.m. on preliminary charges of:

  • Leaving the scene of an accident, a Class B misdemeanor,

  • Possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony, and

  • Possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

Hash was being held without bond pending an appearance in court. Bond will be set when she appears in Greene Superior Court for an initial hearing.
