Engine failure was the likely cause of a fire that destroyed an RV traveling on State Road 54 east of Bloomfield Thursday night. The driver exited the vehicle safely and no injuries were reported.

Deputy Alan Jackson of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, the investigating officer, was dispatched around 7:50 p.m. to a fire on the highway in the area of Warren Road east of town on Thursday, July 25.

Turena Cox of Bloomington was the driver of a 1991 Chevrolet RV that developed some type of mechanical issue enroute. Deputy Jackson said Cox pulled over and smoke appeared out of the engine compartment in the front of the vehicle, then the vehicle caught fire.

The RV was fully-engulfed when firefighters and law enforcement arrived on the scene.

Jackson noted that Cox’s husband was in another vehicle following directly behind the RV and he also pulled over. Cox was the only occupant of the RV and she got out without injury.

In addition to Deputy Jackson, personnel from the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, GCSD Reserves, the Bloomfield Police Department and the Richland Fire Department also responded to the scene.
