Resident calls 911 about a strange woman in his yard late at night

After a resident called 911 about an unknown woman with slurred speech walking around his yard late at night last week, two JPD officers and two GCSD deputies responded. The woman was arrested and is still in jail this week on a drug charge.

Anita Kay Rehmel

Anita Kay Rehmel, 45, Shelburn, was arrested by Deputy William C. Walker of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department early last Wednesday, June 23, following an incident that started late Tuesday, June 22.

Rehmel was in Greene Superior Court on Monday, June 28, for her initial hearing. She has been charged with possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony.

Around 10:15 p.m. last Wednesday, a 911 caller from the Jasonville area told a dispatcher that a woman had shown up at his house and he didn’t know her and didn’t know how she got there. He said the woman was walking around his yard and appeared to be intoxicated.

Deputy Walker was dispatched along with GCSD Sgt. Jordan Allor but they were responding from the Bloomfield area so Jasonville Police Assistant Chief Andrew Duguay and Officer Jake Gambill responded to the scene first.

When Deputy Walker arrived, the JPD officers had the woman, identified as Anita Rehmel, sitting on the ground in handcuffs. She had given them consent to search her vehicle and they reported finding a clear plastic bag with a white powder residue in her purse along with a red plastic straw with a white powder residue – it field-tested positive for methamphetamine. They later found another straw with white powder residue that also tested positive for methamphetamine.

The resident said he was asleep in bed when his wife came in, woke him up and said there was a woman at the front door. He said when he answered the door, Rehmel was standing there and he let her into the house to ask her why she was at his house. He said he then asked her to leave because he could not understand what she was saying due to her slurred speech.

The resident said after Rehmel went outside, she walked to her vehicle, got in then drove the vehicle into his front yard, around a utility trailer full of rock then into his back yard before stopping.

Rehmel was first transported to Greene County General Hospital for a medical clearance then transported to the Greene County Jail where she was booked in at 1:51 a.m.

Rehmel was initially held without bond pending her court appearance. During Monday’s hearing, her bond was set at $5,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. As of late today, Wednesday, she has not yet posted bond and remains in jail.
