Near record breaking voter turnout for Greene County
Greene County saw near record voter turnout in Tuesday’s General Election when 14,829 of the county’s 22,037 registered voters cast a ballot.
This year’s 67.29 percent voter turnout falls second behind a 73.66 percent turnout in 2020 when 15,001 of the county’s 20,365 voters cast a ballot.
“With this being my first election, and it being a big election at that, I was very pleased at how smoothly it went. I’ve had several people reach out to let me know that this is the smoothest election we’ve had in a while,” said Greene County Clerk Jamie Thompson, who took over the role when former clerk Stuart Dowden stepped down from the position. “The voter turnout was amazing.”
High voter turnout meant longer than normal lines at the polling locations.
“I would like to thank all the voters who came out for being kind and courteous even with the longer wait times,” Thompson said. “I would also like to thank all the poll workers and delivery teams. They were amazing. Also, a big thank you to my staff. They all contributed and pitched in to get whatever needed done for the election.”
Although this election has passed, another election will roll around soon. Thompson encourages everyone to make sure they are registered to vote. If anyone has questions on their voting status, call 812-384-2015 for assistance.
“Every vote counts and let’s your voice be heard,” she said.
