On GreeneStreets: News from the Times coming soon

There’s news on GreeneStreets: Readers are going to start seeing some changes soon, but it should have very little effect on readers who are here primarily for the crime news. The GreeneStreets crime blog will stay basically the same as it is now, but some other news will also be available for those who are interested. So, I want to give readers a heads-up - The Worthington Times is going to be integrated in on this same site.

The GreeneStreets item in the top navigation menu will remain and the crime blog’s home page with excerpts and photos will stay the same, as will the jail logs and court news items.

But one of these days, you’ll see a new item in the navigation for news from the Worthington Times along with a calendar of upcoming events, stories and columns by other writers, and a bit of history. This won’t happen overnight – it will take some time.

The first thing readers may or may not notice is the primary domain of this site is going to change to worthingtontimes.com. If you key in greenestreets.com, you will still end up on this site, so it really won’t matter which one you use, they will both bring you to this site. But after this change is made, any links you have saved may not work properly. You will still end up on this site but may need to re-save a new link to a specific story.

The overall Home Page of the site may change but there should still be easy-to-find links to the crime stories.

On Facebook, GreeneStreets and the Times will have their own pages like they do now. GreeneStreets will continue with its own page and links to the site will still be posted, so if you want to get alerts/notifications when stories are posted, or just follow along on Facebook, that won’t change. Other news items and events, from the Times, will be posted on The Worthington Times Facebook page. Keeping these pages separate should be welcomed by readers who only want to see the GreeneStreets news, and by those who only want to see the Times news. If you want it all, follow both pages!

 A little Times history

The first issue of The Worthington Times came out on October 29, 1853. That was 165 years ago, plus a few months. The Times was the first newspaper published in the county and printed under its name at the top of the front page, for decades, were the words “Greene County’s Oldest Newspaper – Established in 1853.”

It would be another 50 years or so before The Daily Call was published in Linton – which later became The Daily Citizen, and The Bloomfield News was published in Bloomfield - then later, The Evening World in Bloomfield. A handful of other papers started up during those first 50 years, but they didn’t stick around long.

The Times eventually focused on news in Worthington and the surrounding countryside, for over a hundred years – since the turn of the last century approximately. But for the first 50 years or so, the Times covered a wider area. The primary coverage area was Worthington of course, at a time when Worthington was enjoying a heyday, but it also covered a wider area, including Greene County and beyond. There’s some interesting stories and tidbits of history to be found in the early issues of the Times.
