Officer finds meth thrown out of a car during a traffic stop
A Lyons man apparently attempted to ditch his methamphetamine by throwing it out the window of a car during a traffic stop. But an LPD officer spotted it and the man ended up in the Greene County jail.
Brayden Michael Pemberton, 19, Lyons, was arrested by Officer Cayden Walker of the Linton Police Department on Tuesday, August 23.
Officer Walker was on routine patrol traveling behind a white Ford Crown Victoria westbound on State Road 54 around 7:18 PM. He noticed the vehicle, which turned south onto 12th Street SE in Linton, had an obstructed license plate and he initiated a traffic stop at 12th Street SE and C Street SE. He noticed that while he was talking to the driver, the passenger, later identified as Pemberton, showed signs of nervousness and when LPD Lieutenant Bobby Pierce arrived to assist and also spoke to the two men, he noticed a handgun between the passenger side door and the seat. Both men were asked to step out of the vehicle for officer safety.
When asked why he was nervous, Pemberton allegedly said because his grandmother was having a heart attack and he was trying to get to her. While he was talking, he asked to smoke a cigarette and consented to a pat down for weapons before he was allowed to reach into his pocket for his cigarettes.
No weapons were found on Pemberton’s person but Lieutenant Pierce located a clear plastic baggie on the side of the road that appeared to be freshly thrown out of the car. Inside the baggie was a clear glass jar containing a white crystal substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine.
Pemberton allegedly admitted that he had thrown the bag out of his pocket and that the substance inside was methamphetamine. In a more thorough search before transport, Pemberton was found to have a clear and orange hypodermic syringe on his person along with one tablet that was determined to be Clonazapam, a controlled substance.
Pemberton was booked into the Greene County Jail at 8:20 PM. He was being held without bond pending court appearance. He has been charged with:
Possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony,
Unlawful possession of syringe, a Level 6 felony, and
Possession of a controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor.
