While others were ringing in the New Year or watching the ball drop on television last Thursday night, numerous law enforcement officers in Greene County were negotiating with a suspect on the scene of a stand-off. When a rural Bloomfield man involved in a domestic altercation, who was in a house with a young child, refused to exit or open the door, a deputy with search warrant in hand forced the door open. Officers entered and after a struggle, the suspect was taken into custody.

Edward Shane Chadwick, 39, rural Bloomfield, was arrested by Deputy Camron Frye of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department during an incident that occurred on New Year’s Eve, last Thursday, December 31. Chadwick was booked into the Greene County Jail at 1:36 a.m. on New Year’s Day, last Friday, January 1.

Deputy Frye, the investigating officer, was dispatched to a residence located on West State Road 54, Bloomfield, where an active domestic situation was occurring. Dispatch at the sheriff’s department had gotten a call from a woman who said Chadwick had hit her and hit her mother. The woman also said Chadwick had a young child with him and Chadwick and the child were locked inside a bedroom.

Numerous officers responded. Lt. Marvin Holt of the Bloomfield Police Department was first to arrive on the scene, followed by GCSD Deputy Jordan Allor, Deputy Davis Aerne, and possibly others. As the situation unfolded, Greene County Sheriff Mike Hasler and Chief Deputy Major George Dallaire also responded.

When Lt. Holt arrived, he saw the woman exit the residence and he saw the woman’s mother on the ground in the doorway with Chadwick on top of her. Lt. Holt attempted to separate the two and Chadwick got up and retreated into the house. Both the woman and her mother were then out of the house but they said a child was still inside. The woman was the parent of the child. Chadwick was not a parent of the child.

Deputy Frye said when he got to the scene, Chadwick came to the door and told the officers to “F*** off.” Chadwick then retreated back into the house again.

Deputies attempted to communicate with Chadwick but Chadwick did not respond.

Sheriff Hasler and Maj. Dallaire were notified of the unfolding situation and responded – Maj. Dallaire is a trained negotiator.

Maj. Dallaire was successful in making contact with Chadwick on the phone and Chadwick told him he would not come out of the house and that he had been attacked by the woman and her mother. Chadwick allegedly said he would open the door if they got a search warrant. And so they did.

At 12:34 a.m., Greene Superior Judge Dena Martin approved a search warrant to enter the house to get Chadwick and the warrant was executed at 1 a.m.

Maj. Dallaire advised Chadwick he had a warrant. At that point, Chadwick was at the front door, but he didn’t open it. Deputy Frye reported that when Chadwick walked away from the front door, Maj. Dallaire, with warrant in hand, forced the front door open.

Chadwick allegedly made an aggressive move toward Maj. Dallaire and Dallaire pushed him back. Dallaire was backed up by Deputy Allor, Lt. Holt and Deputy Frye, who all entered the residence with Dallaire.

A physical struggle then ensued between Chadwick and Deputy Allor and Deputy Frye deployed his taser into Chadwick’s side. While Chadwick was on the ground being handcuffed, he allegedly continued to resist and was stunned again.

As Chadwick was escorted up and to a patrol vehicle, he allegedly uttered several threats to the officers, calling them names and saying he would f*** them up if they would take off their badge.

According to Deputy Frye, during interviews, the woman said Chadwick had come home drunk and hostile and when she decided to leave and tried to pick up her child, Chadwick prevented her from picking up the child and hit her three times. When the mother tried to intervene, Chadwick allegedly hit the mother in the mouth, then in the head then took her to the ground.

Chadwick allegedly said he did not hit the mother and that she had fallen. He said everything was fine when he got home but the woman and her mother wanted to go somewhere and he could tell one was high. He said he grabbed the child and tried to go into his bedroom but they attempted to get the child from him. He said he didn’t let that happen and the woman came at him. He said the woman had hit him and was clawing and scratching at him.

Photographs were taken of injuries received by Chadwick, the woman, the mother and officers.

In a probable cause affidavit prepared by Deputy Frye, there is no indication that the child was injured and no information is included regarding the child’s status.

Chadwick’s bond was set at $31,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. He has since posted $3,100 and been released.

The date is not yet known but when Chadwick appears in Greene Superior Court for an initial hearing, he will be formally charged with eight counts including:

• Domestic battery committed in the presence of a child less than 16 years old, a Level 6 felony,

• Domestic battery committed in the presence of a child less than 16 years old, a Level 6 felony,

• Battery against a public safety official, a Level 6 felony,

• Intimidation, a Level 6 felony,

• Intimidation, a Level 6 felony,

• Resisting law enforcement – knowingly or intentionally forcibly resists, a Class A misdemeanor,

• Intimidation – threat is to commit a forcible felony, a Level 6 felony, and

• Intimidation – threat is to commit a forcible felony, a Level 6 felony.
