Montgomery sworn in as Worthington Deputy Marshal

This week during the regular monthly meeting of the Worthington Town Council, Ryan Montgomery accepted the opportunity to fill one of two open positions with the Worthington Police Department. Montgomery was sworn in as a Deputy Marshal on Tuesday evening by Council President Tom Franklin before Montgomery was presented with his WPD badge.

On Tuesday evening, Ryan Montgomery, center, was sworn in as WPD Deputy Marshal by Council President Tom Franklin, left, after a recommendation from Worthington Town Marshal Jim O’Malley, right.

During the meeting, Franklin explained the council was committed to building a professional police department.

“We decided we’re going to try to have the best police department possible and we hired the best guy in Greene County,” said Franklin, speaking of Worthington Town Marshal Jim O’Malley, former detective from the sheriff’s department. “We have to give him the best officers to work with.”

Montgomery sat for an interview with the council the previous week and Franklin said it was a very good interview.

Montgomery, 28, is familiar with the area. After school in Bloomfield, he earned an associate degree in criminal justice from Vincennes University in 2012. He then started his career in law enforcement as a reserve officer for the Worthington Police Department.

Since his initial stint in Worthington, Montgomery has served as a reserve deputy for the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, a reserve officer for the Lyons Police Department and a reserve officer for the Bloomfield Police Department.

Starting in 2013, he worked full-time for Greene County Courthouse Security. Since 2015, after some time in security for IU Health, he has worked for Daviess County Community Hospital Security.

Worthington Deputy Marshal Ryan Montgomery, left, received his WPD badge this week along with congratulations from Town Marshal Jim O’Malley, right.

Marshal O’Malley told the council Montgomery was someone he wanted to hire.

“Ryan is current on all his training and he will make a fine officer,” said O’Malley. “He’s going to make me look good.”

A motion was made and seconded to hire Montgomery. It passed with a unanimous vote and praise from council members.

Montgomery is the son of Tom and Cindy Montgomery of Bloomfield. Montgomery and his fiancé Kayla plan to marry later this year and make their home in Worthington.

Although Montgomery has been sworn in, he will finish commitments to current employers. He said he would be putting his resignation notices in to Daviess County Community Hospital and the Bloomfield Police Department. He’s expected to be on full-time duty with WPD within a couple of weeks.
