Martinsville woman arrested on methamphetamine charges following traffic stop in Greene County

A 41-year-old Martinsville woman faces two felony drug charges and a misdemeanor charge after Indiana State Police investigating a wanted man discovered suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia during a traffic stop Monday.

Melissa A. Scott was arrested Oct. 26 and charged with possession of methamphetamine as a Level 5 felony, possession of methamphetamine as a Level 6 felony and possession of paraphernalia as a Class C misdemeanor.

Scott appeared in Greene County court Tuesday, Oct. 27, where her bond was set at $15,000 surety with 10% cash allowed.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Greene County Circuit Court, Indiana State Police Trooper Caleb Sipes was attempting to locate Kevin Elsmore, who had an active sealed felony arrest warrant through Greene County.

Investigators determined Elsmore was near Mooresville and traveling south. Authorities believed he might be traveling in either a white Dodge Ram pickup truck or a white GMC Envoy driven by Scott, an acquaintance of Elsmore.

At approximately 12:35 a.m., Sipes stopped the Dodge Ram on State Road 45 near East Hickory Hills Drive in Solsberry. The driver was identified as Isaiah Fannin, who told police he had not spoken with Elsmore.

A search of the truck revealed no illegal items, and Fannin was released.

Shortly afterward, Sipes observed the GMC Envoy traveling south on State Road 45. According to the affidavit, the vehicle turned onto East Timbertrace Drive as the trooper approached.

Sipes stopped the vehicle at approximately 12:55 a.m. and identified Scott as the driver.

When questioned about Elsmore's whereabouts, Scott initially shook her head no but eventually acknowledged that he was hiding in the rear of her vehicle, according to court documents.

Scott also informed officers that she had a firearm in her purse.

Troopers and investigators approached the vehicle and ordered Elsmore to exit from the rear cargo area. He complied and was taken into custody without incident.

Scott subsequently gave officers permission to search her vehicle.

During the search, Sipes reported finding a gray purse on the driver's side floorboard containing a Smith & Wesson 10mm handgun and a small pouch.

Inside the pouch, investigators discovered Scott's driver's license and a clear plastic container holding two plastic bags of a white crystalline substance.

According to the affidavit, the substance field-tested positive for methamphetamine.

When questioned, Scott allegedly told investigators she had forgotten the methamphetamine was in her purse and had possessed it for a while.

She also told police she had been trying to remain sober.

According to court documents, Scott said she had been attempting to distance herself from Elsmore but that he continued appearing at the residence where she was staying in Mooresville.

Scott told investigators she was transporting Elsmore because she wanted him to leave her mother's residence.

During additional questioning, Scott allegedly told police she last purchased methamphetamine approximately three weeks earlier.

Before being transported to jail, Scott informed a trooper that she had a glass smoking device concealed in her clothing. Officers recovered the device, which reportedly contained white residue.

According to the affidavit, Scott told investigators the device was used to smoke drugs.

Scott and Elsmore were transported to the Greene County Jail. Elsmore was booked on his outstanding warrant, while Scott was booked on preliminary drug charges.

The suspected methamphetamine and handgun were taken to the Indiana State Police Bloomington Post for evidence processing.

Scott faces a Level 5 felony charge of possession of methamphetamine involving an enhancing circumstance, a Level 6 felony charge of possession of methamphetamine and a Class C misdemeanor charge of possession of paraphernalia.
