A man who was serving time on work release was arrested on drug charges in Bloomfield last Friday morning after an Indiana State Police trooper noticed suspicious behavior.

Kenneth Kieffer Fielder, 24, of rural Bloomfield, was taken into custody by Indiana State Police Trooper Caleb Garvin.

Trooper Garvin was on duty and sitting in his patrol vehicle in the area of U.S. 231 and Furnace Road around 9:44 a.m. Friday when Fielder came walking by, headed north on the west side of the highway, wearing a backpack.

Trooper Garvin said Fielder was walking at a slow pace and didn’t seem to be in a hurry until he saw the officer. He then immediately turned west to walk on a pedestrian walkway headed away from the trooper. Garvin said as Fielder turned the corner he looked back at him and began walking at a much faster pace, then glanced back at the trooper again.

So Garvin pulled across the highway closer to Fielder and asked how he was doing. A conversation began and Fielder seemed to know who Garvin was. When the trooper asked where he knew him from, Fielder said Garvin was the officer who had arrested him previously. Fielder said he was in the work release program and was staying clean.

When Garvin asked where Fielder was headed, he said he was coming from the Dollar General store and was walking back to the work release building. Garvin noted that walking west was not the quickest way to get to the work release center.

The trooper asked if he could search his person and then his backpack. Fielder agreed, but in the backpack, Garvin reported finding pills he believed to be suboxone, a narcotic drug, and gabapentin, a legend drug.

Fielder was booked into the Greene County Jail where he was being held without bond.

A criminal case was filed against Fielder the same day and when he appears in Greene Superior Court for an initial hearing, he’s facing charges of possession of a narcotic drug, a Level 6 felony, and unlawful possession of a legend drug, a Level 6 felony.
