A Lyons man arrested last May following an investigation by the Greene County Drug Task Force has been convicted of dealing methamphetamine. He was sentenced to six years in prison.

Jeffery Ray Adams, now 47, of Lyons, was sentenced by Judge Erik Allen in Greene Circuit Court in January. He has since been transferred out of the Greene County Jail and is currently serving his time at the Indiana Department of Corrections Branchville Correctional Facility.

[Editor’s Note: Catching up… After following this case closely and posting several updates, it came to a conclusion during the time I was in the hospital and not able to post. So although this is late news, six years is a significant sentence and posting a story covering the sentencing is appropriate.]

Adams was accused of selling methamphetamine on multiple occasions last spring. Officers said he had been traveling out-of-county to obtain quantities of meth that were being sold in Greene County.

Adams was charged with two counts: Conspiracy to commit dealing in methamphetamine, a Level 4 felony, and dealing in methamphetamine, a Level 5 felony.

The case was scheduled to go to trial then in mid-December, an agreement was reached and Adams appeared before Judge Allen on January 16 and changed his plea to guilty on both counts. The court accepted the terms of the negotiated plea agreement.

On both counts, Adams was sentenced to six years in the DOC with the sentences to be served concurrently/at the same time. He was given credit for 147 days already served as of the day of sentencing.

The court recommended Adams be allowed to enter into the Purposeful Incarceration Program within the DOC and if he successfully completes the appropriate substance abuse treatment program as determined by DOC, the court will consider a modification of the sentence.

Another case pending against Adams was dismissed. In that case, he was charged with disorderly conduct – unreasonable noise, a Class B misdemeanor. Police said he would not stop yelling during a midnight traffic stop in Worthington back in May.

This is not the first time Adams has served time in DOC. Records show he does have a criminal history. He was accused of getting into a high-speed drag race with another man on a hilly stretch of highway near Solsberry in May of 2009. One car was traveling in the right lane, and one in the left. When they crested a blind hill on a double yellow line, the other vehicle crashed head-on into a motorcycle. The motorcycle driver was killed in the fiery crash and so was a passenger in the vehicle. Adams escaped injury but he was later charged with several criminal counts related to the crash. At the conclusion of a trial, a jury found him guilty of one count of reckless homicide, a Class C felony, and lesser charges of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and reckless driving. He was sentenced In June 2010 to six years with two suspended leaving four to serve in the Indiana DOC. He served his time and with good time credit, was released in February 2012.

Now that he has been transferred out of Greene County, the DOC’s projected release date for Adams is February 20, 2023.
