A Lyons man was arrested once last week and once this week, on warrants issued in two different cases. Both cases involve thefts, from two different stores in Linton.

Dustin Lee Covey, 36, of Lyons, was arrested on Monday, June 10, by Linton Police Officer Debbie McDonald on a warrant issued on a preliminary charge of attempted theft, a Class A misdemeanor. His bond was set at $1,000 surety with ten percent allowed. Covey posted $100 cash and was released.

A couple of days later, a petition to revoke a suspended sentence in an earlier case was filed and a new warrant issued for Covey’s arrest. Yesterday, on Monday, June 17, he was taken into custody at the Greene County Courthouse by Security Officer Patrick Fulford and now Covey’s being held without bond.

In the earlier case, Covey was convicted at the end of May for theft, a Class A misdemeanor. He was accused of shoplifting a blue bath robe, matching blue sleep pants, MASH DVDs and a bottle of Caliber vodka from the Walmart store in Linton before the holidays.

Officer Debbie McDonald, the investigating officer, said the items had a total retail value of $113.77.

When he was interviewed, Covey allegedly admitted he went to Walmart, took the items, tucked everything under his arm and walked out the doors on the pharmacy side without paying for the items.

Covey pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one year in the county jail with 359 days suspended.

Covey was on probation when he got into trouble again and a petition to revoke that suspended sentence was filed.

In the latest case to be filed against him, Covey is again accused of theft, a Class A misdemeanor.

In this case, LPD Officer Debbie McDonald was dispatched to Orscheln’s Farm and Home Store in Linton around 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 10. An employee explained a man in the store had concealed something in his pants and she pointed to the man, identified by McDonald as Covey.

When the officer asked Covey if he had something that he had not paid for, Covey allegedly said yes and pulled a jacket out of his pants.

McDonald reported the jacket was a Carhartt jacket that normally retailed for $99.99 but had been marked down to $55.01.
