Liquor store employee accused of theft

A Bloomfield man who was working at a liquor store is facing a charge of theft for allegedly pocketing money from customers instead of putting it into the cash register.

A summons has been sent to Michael Tyler Hash, 37, Bloomfield, ordering him to appear in Greene Superior Court for an initial hearing on October 8.

Hash is facing a preliminary charge of theft, a Class A misdemeanor.

In mid-July, Lt. Marvin Holt of the Bloomfield Police Department began an investigation into an alleged theft by an employee of the Bloomfield Liquor Store on East Main Street in Bloomfield.

The store manager explained that Hash was an employee and she believed he was pocketing money from the cash register. The manager provided Lt. Holt with video taken from the store’s cameras as well as receipts and a detailed timeline she said showed Hash had taken $215 on one day and $368.54 on another day. Hash is accused of taking payment from customers but not entering it into the cash register and instead putting the money in his pocket.

When Lt. Holt interviewed Hash, he was cooperative and allegedly admitted he had taken the money and told how he was taking it. He said he knew it was wrong and that he was trying to take care of his family. He promised to pay the money back but said he didn’t have any money to pay at the time of the interview.
