Linton residents to see increased electric, trash rates
Two ordinances approved at Monday night’s Linton City Council meeting will result in higher utility bills for residents starting in March.
The council approved new rates for trash service and electricity. Monthly trash service will increase by $4, from $16 to $20, while electric rates will rise by 5.3%. Mayor John Preble said the average electric bill will increase by about $7 per month.
“They won’t see the increase until their March bills,” said Utility Department Superintendent Brent Slover.
March utility bills will be due by March 16.
Council member Linda Bedwell, who serves on the pool board, addressed concerns about the future of the city pool.
“There haven’t been any decisions made,” Bedwell said. “We need to schedule a pool board meeting in January.”
Bedwell added that her primary concern is whether the pool will be open this summer.
“I’d like to hold a town hall meeting to discuss the issues and costs,” Preble said. “It’s a very tough decision.”
The council also commended city workers for their efforts during recent snowstorms.
“I think the guys did a fantastic job with snow removal,” said City of Linton Manager of Operations Brent Murray. “Snow removal isn’t an easy job.”
The council approved a lease with Route 54 Landscape on the south side of town.
“He has really done a good job down there. I appreciate that,” Bedwell said.
The council also approved the Stockton Township Fire Agreement between the city and the Stockton Township Trustee. The funds, totaling $90,000 paid in two installments of $45,000, support fire and EMS services.
In his report, Linton Police Chief Paul Clark shared December 2024 statistics. The department received 1,050 calls, 686 of which were calls for service that generated a report. Of those, 368 led to a police investigation or incident report. The department also handled 135 9-1-1 calls.
Linton Fire Department Chief Eric Carpenter reported 93 calls in December—73 EMS and 20 fire. For the year 2024, the department responded to 1,123 calls.
In other business, the council:
Reappointed Dick Kaiser to the Alcohol and Beverage Board for a two-year term, with council member Greg Sapp abstaining.
Appointed Jathan Wright to the Greene County Economic Development Corporation Board.
Appointed Mayor Preble to the Southern Indiana Development Commission Board.
