Linton man arrested last Saturday for battery with a deadly weapon

A Linton man who got into a dispute with another man over a money transaction in a video game is accused of poking the man with a knife. He was arrested and will be in court in the morning on a felony charge of battery with a deadly weapon.

Dalton Scott Monahan

Dalton Scott Monahan, 26, Linton, was arrested by Sgt. Logan Hobbs of the Linton Police Department last Saturday, October 5.

Sgt. Hobbs was dispatched at 10:08 a.m. Saturday to an apartment in Linton where the resident reported a battery had occurred.

The resident said Dalton Monahan, who lives in the same complex, had been at his residence and while there, they got into a dispute over money and when the resident sat down in a recliner, Monahan tried to flip the recliner over. When the resident went into a bedroom to get away, Monahan came in and allegedly picked up a folding handsaw with a six-inch blade and poked the resident. The resident said he tried to grab the handsaw/knife to get it away and in the process, one of his fingers was cut. He said he told Monahan to leave numerous times and Monahan finally left.

When Monahan was interviewed at the police department, he said the dispute was over money in a video game transaction between the two that occurred in August. He said he was at the man’s apartment playing video games but there was no argument, the man was not upset and he wasn’t told to leave but had left on his own.

Sgt. Hobbs confronted Monahan with the parts of his story that did not make sense and then Monahan allegedly admitted he had been lying. Monahan then said the two were playing video games and he (Monahan) started “picking” at the man and they got into an argument. He allegedly admitted picking up the handsaw/knife and that he had poked the man with it. He admitted the man tried to grab it and might have been cut.

When asked why he didn’t leave when he was asked, Monahan allegedly said he has a “listening problem” which he clarified by saying that means he does not do what people want him to do.

Monahan was taken into custody and booked into the Greene County Jail at 11:52 a.m. His bond was set at $10,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. As of late Wednesday, October 7, he had not yet posted bond and remained in jail.

The criminal case was filed against Dalton in Greene Circuit Court and he’s scheduled to appear for an initial hearing tomorrow morning, Thursday, October 8.

Dalton is facing a preliminary charge of battery by means of a deadly weapon, a Level 5 felony.

That’s not the only hearing that’s on his schedule for tomorrow.

In mid-September, another case was filed against Dalton in Greene Superior Court. He wasn’t arrested but was summoned to appear in court for an initial hearing, also scheduled for tomorrow, on three counts of theft.

In that earlier case, Monahan is accused of using someone else’s debit card without permission to make purchases of gas, smokes and over $154 worth of purchases in the “Call of Duty” video gaming app.
