Linton man arrested after bar fight

A Linton man was arrested after an LPD officer responded to a bar fight over the weekend. The suspect allegedly hit another man multiple times until he was unconscious, then he kicked him in the head.

Joshua D. Jones

Joshua D. Jones, 34, Linton, was arrested by Officer Joe Riley of the Linton Police Department early last Sunday, June 20.

Shortly before 2 a.m. last Sunday, Officer Riley was dispatched to a fight between two men at the Vault, located at 59 South Main Street in Linton.

Joshua Jones, one of the men involved in the fight, allegedly told Officer Riley that while he was inside the bar, three “girls” kept bothering him and they had falsely accused him of calling them derogatory names. He said when he tried to leave, the other man involved in the fight had gotten up in his face and hit him. Jones said he then defended himself and put the other man on the ground. Officer Riley reported Jones had some redness to his nose and hands.

When Officer Riley talked to witnesses on the scene, they told a different story.

One witness said Jones had been an issue the entire night and when he started calling her names as well as calling one of her friends a name, the other man involved in the fight asked Jones to stop. Officer Riley reported the witness said Jones got in the man’s face, tried to headbutt him but missed, then started swinging at the other man, hitting him multiple times in the face and head, knocking the man unconscious. The witness said once the other man was on the ground, Jones kicked the man in the head.

Another witness confirmed the story and a third witness said he saw Jones hit the other man multiple times and he saw the other man lose consciousness.

Officer Riley reported the other man had severe swelling and bruising to both sides of his face as well as bruising and redness on his neck. At that time, the man did not remember what had happened. He refused medical treatment on the scene but about an hour later, he went to the hospital for treatment.

Jones was taken into custody and booked into the Greene County Jail at 3:08 a.m. Bond was set at $10,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. He posted $1,000 and was released later the same day.

Jones is scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court for his initial hearing on July 1.

He is facing a charge of battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 5 felony.
