Kokomo couple arrested for theft

A couple from Kokomo allegedly said they were in need of food and a place to stay when they placed stickers over price tags at a local store then scanned the items at a self-check-out and only paid $0.40 for several expensive items they intended to sell.

Travis Dewayne Sherbino, 29, and Emma Jo Grace Galloway, 19, both from Kokomo, were arrested by Officer Cayden Walker of the Linton Police Department following an incident at Walmart in Linton last Friday night, October 21.

Officer Walker responded to the store around 10 PM Friday after the store contacted the police department and said a theft had occurred earlier in the day and the suspects had returned to the store.

When he arrived, one of the store’s asset protection associates showed him video footage from around 8 PM when a man and a woman, later identified as Sherbino and Galloway, were using a self-checkout. Galloway was scanning the items and when the video was zoomed in, it showed a sticker had been placed over the barcodes for the items. The video allegedly showed she scanned a Boss audio system head unit valued at $119.88, a Boss DVD valued at $249, an EverStart Max flashlight valued at $34.88, and a radio installation dash kit valued at $15.70 but the register only showed a total of $0.40 and that is what they paid for the items.

During interviews, Sherbino allegedly admitted he was the one who placed the stickers and Galloway allegedly admitted she was the one who scanned the items. Sherbino said he was homeless and was trying to get the items cheaper so he could sell them to have money for food and a place to stay that night and that he paid with his card. Galloway allegedly admitted she knew the items were scanned for a total of only $0.40 and she confirmed the plan was to sell the items to get money for a place to stay and food.

LPD Officers Wayman JR Blazier and Alan Jackson assisted in this investigation and located the items in a vehicle outside of the store.

Both Sharbino and Galloway were arrested and transported to the sheriff's department. Sherbino was booked in at 11:39 PM. Galloway was booked in around 12:22 AM. In both cases their bond was set at $1000 surety with 10% cash allowed. Both have since posted bond and been released.

Both Sherbino and Galloway are being charged with theft, a Class A misdemeanor.

Sherbino's initial hearing is scheduled for October 31 and Galloways's initial hearing is scheduled for November 3 in Greene Superior Court.
