Jasonville woman facing theft charge

A Jasonville woman accused of stealing a cigarette roller worth $2.20 is facing a charge of misdemeanor theft.

Desiree Dawn Whitfield, 33, Jasonville, is being summoned to appear in Greene Superior Court in January for an initial hearing on a preliminary charge of theft, a Class A misdemeanor.

A criminal case was filed against Whitfield last week as a result of an investigation by Officer Andrew Duguay of the Jasonville Police Department.

Officer Duguay was dispatched to the Friendly Porch Store on East Main Street in Jasonville on November 3. He spoke to a cashier and store manager who said a woman came into the store, walked around to the location of cigarette rollers, picked one up then jogged out of the store. The manager provided a license plate number from the woman’s vehicle.

When Officer Duguay viewed surveillance footage from the store, it confirmed the manager’s story and he recognized the suspect as Whitfield.

The cigarette rolling machine that was taken retails for $2.20.

Officer Duguay attempted to locate Whitfield but was unsuccessful and a criminal case was filed against her.
