A Jasonville man who said he threw a brick at a dog in self-defense is facing a misdemeanor charge. A resident said the man threw the brick at his mailbox.

Jesse D. Betts, 36, Jasonville, is been summoned to appear in Greene Superior Court in early December for an initial hearing on a charge of criminal mischief, a Class B misdemeanor as a result of an investigation by Master Trooper Eric Nash into incidents that occurred in Jasonville back in early September.

Trooper Nash was dispatched to Jasonville at 11:41 a.m. on Sunday, September 6, for alleged threats that had been made by Betts toward another Jasonville resident. Betts allegedly threatened the other man’s life saying he was going to kill him and everyone on the property where he lived.

The next day, on Monday, September 7, which was Labor Day, Trooper Nash returned to the same location when someone reported that Betts had damaged another resident’s mailbox. The resident told the trooper that Betts was walking down the street in front of his residence and that he watched as Betts picked up a brick from the roadway and threw it at the mailbox and damaged it.

When Trooper Nash located Betts and talked to him, Betts allegedly said he was throwing the brick at the resident’s dog that was barking at him. He said he didn’t mean to damage the mailbox but threw the brick in self-defense.

When asked about threatening the other man the day before, Trooper Nash reported that Betts laughed and said he wanted to kick that man’s ---, but now they were friends.

A criminal case was filed against Betts last Thursday and the summons sent out on Friday.
