Jasonville man faces charges of child exploitation, possession of child sexual abuse material
/A 35-year-old Jasonville man faces two felony charges following an investigation into an alleged sexual relationship with a 17-year-old and the discovery of sexually explicit images and videos involving the minor.
Joshua McKenzie was arrested Oct. 16 and charged with Level 3 felony child exploitation and Level 4 felony possession of child sexual abuse material, both involving enhancements for a prior conviction.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed Oct. 15 in Greene County Circuit Court, the investigation began Oct. 6 when the juvenile's mother contacted Greene County Dispatch after learning her child allegedly had been involved in a sexual relationship with McKenzie.
Jasonville Police Officer Skylar Scott conducted the investigation.
According to court documents, the juvenile told investigators during an Oct. 11 interview that McKenzie initially contacted them through Snapchat on Sept. 17. The juvenile alleged McKenzie initially claimed to be in his 20s.
The two reportedly met the following day at a Jasonville gas station before traveling to Jasonville Reservoir Park, where the juvenile said they engaged in sexual activity.
The juvenile told investigators the relationship continued until Oct. 6 and that the two exchanged sexually explicit photographs and videos through Snapchat.
According to the affidavit, the juvenile said McKenzie knew they were 17 years old.
Investigators subsequently searched the juvenile's cellphone with parental consent and discovered sexually explicit photographs and a video involving the minor saved in a Snapchat conversation with McKenzie.
Scott later interviewed McKenzie at the Jasonville Police Department.
According to court documents, McKenzie initially provided conflicting information about how long he had known the juvenile and the nature of their relationship.
During the interview, McKenzie acknowledged having sexual contact with the juvenile and receiving nude photographs. He also eventually acknowledged knowing the juvenile was 17 years old, according to the affidavit.
McKenzie denied taking the videos and told investigators he had not wanted them sent to him.
On Oct. 12, Scott obtained surveillance footage from Jasonville Reservoir Park that reportedly showed McKenzie and the juvenile entering a park bathroom together Sept. 18.
Investigators also searched McKenzie's cellphone after obtaining his consent.
According to the affidavit, Scott discovered the same sexually explicit photographs and videos that had been located on the juvenile's phone. Several files appeared to have been saved in the Snapchat conversation from McKenzie's account.
Although the male subject's face was not visible in one video, Scott reported identifying distinctive tattoos matching those on McKenzie's arms and hands.
Based on the comparison, Scott concluded McKenzie was the male depicted in the video.
A criminal history check also revealed McKenzie had a previous conviction for sexual misconduct with a minor. Court documents indicate judgment was entered in that case Dec. 7, 2012, in Monroe County.
Both cellphones were seized as evidence and were expected to be submitted to the Monroe County High Tech Crime Unit for forensic examination.
McKenzie is scheduled to make his initial court appearance Tuesday, Oct. 20.
