Jasonville man accused of domestic battery

After an upset and barefoot woman was found walking on a county road late at night, an investigation led to the arrest of a Jasonville man on a charge of domestic battery.

William Herndon

William O. Herndon, 76, Jasonville, was arrested by Sgt. Bobby Pierce of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department. Herndon was booked into the Greene County Jail at 1:26 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, following an incident late Monday, August 31.

The incident occurred in the Jasonville area, first attracting the attention of Officer Dustin Cain of the Jasonville Police Department who then called in GCSD Sgt. Pierce to investigate.

Around 11:15 p.m. that Monday, Officer Cain notified dispatch that he would be out of his patrol vehicle to check on a woman found walking along County Road 1380 West near Jasonville. The woman was upset, crying, and she was barefoot. She said she had been battered by her husband. Officer Cain transported her to the Jasonville Police Department.

When Sgt. Pierce arrived and talked to the woman, she said there was an argument and her husband, William Herndon, became aggressive, grabbed her wrists and threatened her. She said she ran outside and started walking. She said there were other incidents in the past and officers had been called to their house, but Herndon had never gone to jail.

Sgt. Pierce located Herndon sitting outside on his porch. Herndon also said officers had been called to the house multiple times but he claimed the woman had dementia and had been physically violent in the past. He confirmed the same details about the argument that the woman claimed but Herndon said there was no physical altercation. Herndon was asked about red marks on the woman’s wrists but he claimed he did not recall if he had grabbed her or not.

Herndon was transported to jail where his bond was set at $1,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. He posted $100 and was released.

Herndon is due to appear in Greene Superior Court for an initial hearing next Monday when he will be formally charged with domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor.
