Jail inmate accused of battery and choking of another inmate

An inmate in the Greene County Jail awaiting trial in a case involving a hit and run fatality is now facing additional charges following an incident that occurred between him and another inmate.

Billy Robert Schubla

Billy Robert Schubla, now 67, Linton, an inmate in the Greene County Jail awaiting trial, has been charged in a physical altercation that occurred on June 30 with another inmate.

Deputy Harvey Holt of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department investigated the incident, called in by Jail Commander Ken Conolty who told him Schubla and another inmate had gotten into a fight in “B” Block and it appeared that Schubla had choked the other inmate.

When Deputy Holt reviewed video, he reported it showed at 2:50 p.m., Schubla and the other inmate were arguing when Schubla walked over to the inmate and grabbed his neck with his right hand. It appeared Schubla then pushed the inmate backwards then grabbed the inmate’s neck with both hands. At that point, the view was partially blocked by Schubla’s back. After approximately six seconds, Schubla let go and walked away.

Deputy Holt interviewed both men who both said they had gotten into a verbal argument after a telephone conversation the other inmate had with the other inmate’s girlfriend. The inmate said Schubla was upset with him about how he treated his girlfriend and Schubla told him he was controlling. The inmate said the pressure on his neck made it difficult to speak and his neck was sore the rest of the day.

Schubla allegedly admitted to grabbing the other inmate but believed he only grabbed his shirt area. He agreed he told the other inmate he was controlling. He said he just got upset over things the other inmate had been doing in the cell block and he had enough.

Schubla appeared in Greene Superior Court last week and was charged with strangulation, a Level 6 felony, and battery resulting in bodily injury, a Class A misdemeanor.

In the previous case pending against Schubla, he was arrested on April 16 then charged in Greene Circuit Court with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, a Level 5 felony, following a hit-and-run fatality in Jasonville on April 15. In that case, Schubla is due back in court for a pretrial conference in August with a trial by jury currently scheduled for early September, a date that is likely to change.
