An Indianapolis woman has an initial hearing in Greene County next week after being arrested on I-69, accused of driving under the influence of marijuana and reckless driving. A trooper said she was speeding along at 98 mph in a 70.

Ashley Nicole Stone, 34, Indianapolis, was arrested by Indiana State Police Trooper Richard Klun on Friday morning, June 26.

Stone was the driver of a red 2016 Dodge Dart that was traveling on I-69 around 9:15 that morning while Trooper Klun was patrolling I-69 and saw the red car coming up behind him at a high rate of speed. He said rear radar showed the car was going 98 mph in a 70 mph zone.

Trooper Klun reported when the red car got closer, it slowed down and didn’t pass. The trooper also slowed down and the red car slowed down and seemed to refuse to pass him. Even when the trooper further slowed down to 35 mph, the red car did not pass, until he pulled off to the shoulder of the road. After the car did pass, a traffic stop was initiated.

During the stop, an overwhelming odor of marijuana was detected coming from the vehicle and when Stone was asked about it, she allegedly said she had just smoked a joint. No further evidence of any illegal substance was found in the vehicle.

At first Stone agreed to submit to a blood test but when she learned she was going to jail, she said if she was going to jail anyway, she wasn’t going to willingly give blood.

Stone was transported to the Greene County Jail and was seated on a bench while the trooper requested a search warrant. While he was typing the request, a jailer advised him Stone had retrieved an item from the front of her jean shorts then put it in her mouth – it was captured on video. She was then found to have more marijuana in a white plastic bag on her person, with loose marijuana on the floor under the bench. The trooper noted the marijuana was not on the floor before Stone was placed on the bench.

The search warrant was approved and a blood draw taken – results pending.

Stone was booked in at 11:12 a.m. with bond set at $9,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. She posted $900 and was released later the same day.

She’s scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court for an initial hearing next Thursday morning, July 23.

She’s facing preliminary charges of:

• Obstruction of justice, a Level 6 felony,

• Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, a Class A misdemeanor,

• Operating a vehicle with a Schedule I or II controlled substance in person’s body, a Class C misdemeanor,

• Possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor, and

• Reckless driving at unreasonable speed that endangers safety, a Class C misdemeanor.
